Sharad Purnima is also known as Kojagari and Ras Purnima. Although there are 12 full moons in the whole year, but the full moon of Sharad is special because the moon descends on this night through 16 Kalas, being closest to the earth. This year Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on 19 October.
According to the Puranas, Goddess Lakshmi was born on the day of Sharad Purnima due to the churning of the ocean, hence this date is also considered to be a giver of wealth. Lord Krishna also created Maharas on this full moon night. It is described in the scriptures that on this day Maa Lakshmi roams the earth and those who wake up in the night and worship Maa Lakshmi, they shower their grace on her and bestow her with wealth and splendor. On this day the moon is in its full phase and the light of all the four moons is spread on the earth. Mother Earth is as if bathed in flood light. Science has also proved that on this day nectar is showered by the rays of the moon, so there is a tradition of keeping kheer in the light of the moon at night. It is a religious belief that nectar showers from the sky on this night. Moon is worshiped on this day. According to astrology, winter starts from this day after changing the season cycle.
