Thiruvananthapuram, June 8 (IANS). India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of the state in the next few days and has issued a red alert in three districts of North Kerala, due to which Kerala is on constant alert.
On Monday, there were reports of damage to buildings, houses and properties due to weather irregularities from many parts of the state.
A red alert has been declared for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on Tuesday, where the IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm in the next 24 hours.
The weather department had also issued an orange alert for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on June 8 and Malappuram and Wayanad on June 9, predicting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.
The Meteorological Department (IMD) classifies rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours as very heavy rainfall.
Yellow alert has been issued in many districts for the last five days. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad are under alert on June 8.
Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad are under yellow alert on June 9. Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod will remain on alert on June 10 and 11.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on June 12.
The IMD has warned that the current weather conditions could bring a storm with heavy rainfall, with the possibility of sudden intense rainfall in short duration.
Authorities have warned that extremely heavy rains could cause flash floods, mudslides and mudslides.
If heavy rains continue, there may be waterlogging in urban areas and low-lying areas.
In view of the possibility of rapid change in weather conditions, the public and government agencies have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions in sensitive areas.
