Indian Cricket: The year 2026 will be remembered for big changes in Indian cricket. After the end of IPL-2026, there has been a massive change in the Indian cricket team, from the captain to the selection of players. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the aggressive young batsman who thrilled everyone with his batting at the age of just 15, has got a place in the team. Vaibhav has been selected for the Asian Games and the T-20 series against Ireland and England. Vaibhav has made his place in the national team at the age of just 15 years and 71 days. If Vaibhav gets the opportunity to play in the upcoming series, he will break Sachin Tendulkar’s 37 year old record. Sachin made his team debut in 1989 against Pakistan at the age of 16 years and 205 days. Vaibhav played many brilliant and memorable innings in IPL due to which the team management is considering him as a player of the future. Vaibhav started showing his charisma in Ranji Trophy at the age of 12. Born on 27 March 2011 in Tajpur, Samastipur, Bihar, Vaibhav’s bat used to spit fire since childhood. After taking blessings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Patna Airport, Vaibhav also became the topic of discussion on social media.
Young players like Parthiv Patel, Harbhajan Singh, Maninder Singh and Vijay Mehra have also earned name and fame by making their international debut at an early age. There was a time when the name of opener Prithvi Shaw, who played like Vaibhav, was also there, he was also given many opportunities by the team management, but today he has gone out of the sporting scene. Now Vaibhav is going to face real cricket, and the grounds of foreign soil are also different. Now Vaibhav has to prove himself in global cricket.
While playing for Rajasthan Royals in his very first IPL- 2026, Vaibhav won the Orange Cup by scoring 775 runs in 16 matches and by hitting 72 sixes in the entire season, he also broke the record of West Indies’ Chris Gayle for most sixes in a season. Now it remains to be seen whether he will perform similar miracles on foreign soil also? Some people have already started comparing Vaibhav with Sachin and Sehwag, which is unfair and amounts to putting mental pressure on a budding talent. Right now, Vaibhav’s career is just beginning, hence one should enjoy Vaibhav’s game with only positive feelings and thoughts and give him full opportunity.
For the upcoming series of the year 2026, the team has also got a new captain in the form of Shreyas Iyer while young batsman Tilak Verma has been made the vice-captain. By doing this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has given a clear message to all the players that now only those players whose performance will be consistently excellent will have a secure future in the Indian team.
Strong comeback of Shreyas – The return of Shreyas as captain, who was out of action due to various reasons since December-2023, is no less than a surprise. Due to his leadership ability and consistent good performance in the IPL, the team management could not remain impressed by him and Shreyas emerged as the first choice as captain, beating many contenders. Shreyas made Kolkata Knight Riders the champion of IPL in 2024 and then showed Punjab Kings the path to the final. Shreyas played two consecutive successful seasons of IPL and performed strongly with his bat.
Shreyas, who emerged as a new face of patience and leadership, returned to the team after 914 days and that too as captain. The return of Shreyas, popularly known as Sarpanch ji, to the team is inspiring because cricket in general has now become a game where there is no dearth of talent. In such a situation, if we can see positive changes in the life of any Indian cricketer after so many ups and downs and struggles, then it is Shreyas Iyer. Whenever he was thrown in and out of the team for some reason, he stayed away from social media and did not make any kind of statement but remained busy in improving his game, for which he got a pleasant reward.
These changes in the cricket field give hope that the Indian cricket team will continue on the path of victory. At one time, players who performed better in domestic competitions like Ranji were given priority in team selection, but now IPL has also become another basis for team selection.
