The SUV/MPV market is growing at a tremendous pace in the country. Keeping in mind the high demand for the 6/7-seater model, many car makers have planned new products in different price range. Here are key details of the top 12 upcoming new 7-seater SUVs and MPVs (family cars).
hyundai stargazer
Hyundai’s new Stargazer MPV was recently introduced in Indonesia. While there is no official word on its India launch, the model is likely to arrive in India next year. Here, the new Hyundai MPV will take on the Kia Carens and the Maruti Suzuki XL6. In Indonesia, the Hyundai Stargazer is offered in four variants – Active, Trend, Style and Prime. For power, the MPV uses a 115bhp, 1.5L MPI petrol engine and two gearbox options – a 6-speed manual and an IVT automatic gearbox option. In terms of features, the Hyundai Stargazer offers ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), Bose premium audio system, BlueLink connected car technology, electronic parking brake with auto hold and adaptive cruise control.
Maruti 7-Seater SUV
If reports are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki is planning to foray into the 7-seater SUV space with a new model in the coming years. It will be the most expensive SUV from the Indo-Japanese automaker and will be sold through its premium Nexa dealership network. Codenamed Y17, the new Maruti 7-seater SUV may share its platform with the soon-to-be-launched Grand Vitara – ie the global C-platform. Under the hood, the model could get the 1.5L K15C DualJet petrol engine and Toyota’s 1.5L TNGA Atkisson petrol strong hybrid powertrain. The SUV could be offered in 6 and 7-seater seating configurations
Toyota C-Segment MPV
Toyota and Suzuki are reportedly co-developing a new C-segment MPV for the Indian market. In terms of price and positioning, the new Toyota 7-seater MPV will sit between the Innova Crysta and the Ertiga. It is reported to be designed on a monocoque platform and come with mild hybrid and electric powertrain options.
Toyota Rumion MPV
The Japanese automaker has already trademarked the Toyota Rumion nameplate in India. It is likely to be used for the re-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The entire design and interior layout will be similar to that of the Ertiga. However, a few cosmetic changes will set it apart. The new Toyota MPV will feature a redesigned front grille with Toyota’s signature logo. The 7-seater MPV is likely to receive minor cosmetic updates and is powered by a 103bhp, 1.5L DualJet petrol engine with start-stop technology.
Toyota Innova Highcross
The Toyota Innova HyCross is set to make its global debut in November 2022, followed by a India launch in January 2023. Here, it will be sold alongside the existing Innova Crysta. In other Asian markets, the Innova High Cross will be introduced as the Innova Genix. The model will underpin Toyota’s global TNGA-C platform and will be around 100 mm longer than the current Innova Crysta. While some of its design bits will be borrowed from the current-gen Innova, it will share some styling elements with the global-spec Veloz and Corolla Cross. Innova HyCross The K powertrain setup could include a 2.0L petrol hybrid unit, which includes a local variant of the new THS II (Toyota Hybrid System II).

Toyota Kirloskar Motor will launch the new generation Fortuner SUV sometime next year. The all-new model could be built on Toyota’s TNGA-F architecture and could get features like ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), electric power steering and vehicle stability control. The new 2023 Toyota Fortuner may get a diesel hybrid powertrain. It could have a 2.8L 1GD-FTV oil burner with mild hybrid technology and an integrated starter generator (ISZG). Rumor has it that the company may use the ‘GD Hybrid’ badge for the hybrid variant of the SUV. The new Fortuner will get features like vehicle stability control, electric power steering and ADAS.
Honda 7-Seater SUV
According to media reports, Honda Cars India may introduce a new 6/7-seater SUV to take on the Hyundai Alcazar and Tata Safari. However, the model is still under consideration. The carmaker may use the global-spec new-generation Honda BR-V’s platform for the upcoming 7-seater SUV. Its powertrain system is likely to be borrowed from the new City Hybrid.
Citroen 7-Seater SUV
The upcoming Citroen 7-seater SUV was recently spied testing and is expected to hit the showrooms sometime next year. Called the Citroen C3 Plus, the model will be based on the C3 hatchback and share most of its design elements, features, platform and engines with its younger sibling. However, it will be longer and will have an extra row of seats. Its wheelbase could be similar to that of the C3. For power, the new Citroen 7-seat SUV may use the same 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbo petrol that does the duty in the C3. The motor, paired with a manual gearbox, makes a claimed power of 110bhp and 190Nm of torque.
New-Gen Kia Carnival
The fourth generation Kia Carnival could make its way in India. This globally unveiled model is taller, wider, taller and more spacious than the previous generation. Major cosmetic changes and feature upgrades are expected. Here, the 2023 Kia Carnival may come with the current engine – i.e. a 2.2-litre diesel. The oil burner churns out 200bhp of peak power and 440Nm of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. In the global markets, the MPV is available with three engine options – a 3.5L GDi V6, a 3.5L GDi V6 Smartstream, and a new 2.2L Smartstream.
Nissan 7-Seater SUV
Nissan is considering a 7-seater variant of the Magnite SUV for the Indian market. The model is likely to have a sliding system to accommodate legroom in the middle and third rows. There will be a foldable bench seat in the cargo space. Most of its components and styling bits will be sourced from magnite. In fact, the new Nissan 7-seater SUV could be offered with a 1.0-litre turbo petrol and a naturally aspirated petrol engine. While the former makes a peak power of 100bhp, the latter churns out 72bhp.
Renault Duster 7-Seater
Speculation is rife that Renault may bring the new generation Duster to India with a 7-seat configuration. It is expected to be launched in the market in 2024. However, the model could make its debut at the end of 2023. The all-new Duster is likely to share its platform with the Dacia bigster SUV. Actually, its design can also be inspired from the bigster concept. The SUV will underpin the group Renault’s new CMF-B platform that is compatible with various body styles and powertrains including plug-in hybrid, battery electric vehicles and petrol. Under the hood, it could house a 1.2L turbo petrol engine with 48V hybrid system.
Skoda 7-Seater SUV
According to media reports, Skoda is considering two new SUVs for the Indian market. One of them is a 7-seater SUV, which is expected to take on cars like the Hyundai Alcazar. As of now, there is no information available about the upcoming Skoda 7-seater SUV.
