The country is going through a major transformation. The pace of technology and modernity, especially in the auto sector, is very positive. The country, which has been dependent on fossil fuels for a long time, is now getting electrified. A few years ago, when the first electric car was launched in the country, there were many questions in people’s mind. For example, whether the electric vehicle will be successful in the country, or whether these vehicles will be able to replace the regular petrol-diesel powered vehicles or not?
Well, there seems to be a solid answer to these questions. Although the Indian automobile industry has been slow in adopting electric vehicles, electric cars are steadily gaining popularity among buyers here. In the first half of the current financial year (FY2021-2022, or between April 2021 and September 2021), a total of 6,261 electric cars were sold in the Indian market, a new record. Before this, so many electric vehicles had not been sold.
If we compare these with last year’s figures, during the same period, i.e. from April 2020 to September 2020, a total of 1,872 units of electric cars were sold in the country. Which shows a growth of 234 per cent on a year-on-year (YoY) basis. In the last few years, many new electric cars have entered the country such as Hyundai Kona, Tata Nexon, MG ZS, Tata Tigor EV etc. But the Tata Nexon EV is becoming the fastest among them all.
Demand for these electric cars:
The Tata Nexon EV has become the largest selling electric vehicle in the country during the first half of the current financial year. During this period, the company has sold a total of 3,618 units, which is 214 percent more than last year. On the other hand, the MG ZS electric SUV has occupied the second position, during which a total of 1,789 units have been sold, which is a 250 percent increase on a year-on-year basis. Apart from this, Tata Tigor EV with 801 units has become the third largest selling electric car in the country.
South Korea’s leading automaker Hyundai’s only electric SUV Kona is at the fourth position. The company has sold only 51 units of it. The demand for this electric SUV has reduced rapidly. On the other hand, only 2 units of Mahindra Verito Electric have been sold. Its sales have registered a complete decline of 75 percent.
Tata Motors is fast gaining its hold in the electric vehicle segment. Apart from Nexon and Tigor, the company is preparing to launch an electric version of the Altroz. At the same time, Maruti Suzuki has also been working on the electric version of the WagonR for a long time. The WagonR Electric has also been spied testing on several different occasions.
