New Delhi. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, while giving a statement recently, has expressed confidence that in the coming 2 years, the price of electric vehicles will be at par with petrol vehicles. Gadkari said that the government is trying its best to increase the sales of electric vehicles. Along with this, the government is also giving subsidy on electric vehicles under the FAME scheme. Along with giving PLI on these vehicles, the government is also installing K fuel stations and charging points for electric vehicles on main highways. Gadkari said this in a webinar organized by ‘The Sustainability Foundation’ of Denmark.
Reasons for the high price of electric vehicles
Gadkari further said in this webinar that the reason for the high cost of electric vehicles is the high cost of lithium used in making batteries of electric vehicles at present.
Measures to reduce the cost of lithium and electric vehicles
Gadkari further said that only 5% GST is levied by the government on electric vehicles, while 48% GST is on petrol vehicles. In such a situation, levying less GST on electric vehicles from the government and more production of lithium in future will reduce its price. Gadkari also informed that the government has set a target of making 30% private cars, 70% commercial cars and 40% buses and 80% electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers by 2030. In such a situation, 81% of the production of lithium batteries is being done locally. Along with this, research is also being done on cheap batteries. This will also reduce the cost of lithium and electric vehicles.
More and more charging points are being set up for electric vehicles
Gadkari said that the government is working to build more and more charging points for electric vehicles. Thousands of charging points will be set up in the country by the government in the next two years. The government has already started the process of setting up 350 charging points in the country. Along with this, petrol pumps have also been allowed to set up charging points for electric vehicles. In such a situation, the number of electric vehicles in the country will also increase rapidly in the next two years.
