Mumbai The youth may not know, but there was a time in the country when Coca Cola and Pepsi were not sold here. Then another soft drink brand used to rule the hearts of the people here. The name of that brand was ‘Campa Cola’. The Campa Cola brand, which was maintained by Hardil Aziz from 1975 to the 90s, was lost in the pages of history after the arrival of Coca Cola and Pepsi in India. Now Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani and his daughter Isha Ambani have once again taken Campa Cola back from history to make everyone’s favorite soft drink.
According to the news of ‘Business Today’, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries has bought the Campa Cola brand from Pure Drinks Group for Rs 22 crore. It will be introduced vigorously to the customers soon. At present, Coca-Cola and Pepsi have an umbrella rule in the country. The arrival of Campa Cola will give a tough competition to both the groups. The Pure Drinks Group was the sole distributor of Coca-Cola in India from 1949 to the 1970s. After the Emergency, when the Janata Party government was formed at the center, it stopped the business of Coca-Cola. That’s when Pure Drinks first launched the Campa Orange soft drink. For this, he then gave the slogan ‘The Great Indian Test’ and on seeing this soft drink became the choice of the people.
After this, the company also launched several flavors of Campa. Then came the era of liberalization in 1990 and the then Congress government at the Center once again allowed Coca Cola and Pepsi to enter the Indian market. Campa Cola could not compete with both American companies in marketing. Its business shrunk, and eventually Pure Drinks Group ceased production of Campa. Now that Mukesh and Isha Ambani are relaunching this drink, it is obvious that Coca-Cola and Pepsi may lose their sweat to compete with the big business house.
