The order value of Government e-Market Place i.e. GeM, an online portal related to government procurement, has crossed Rs 1 lakh crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet, referring to the achievement of this portal, said that it is heartening to know that GeM India has bagged orders worth Rs 1 lakh crore in a single year. This is a huge increase compared to the previous years. He said that the GeM platform is especially strengthening the MSME units as 57 per cent of the order value is coming from the MSME sector itself.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has also congratulated all the stakeholders associated with GeM on this occasion. He said that all the stakeholders, especially small and medium scale businessmen, women businessmen and startups, who are contributing to the vision of self-reliant India, as well as all the weavers and artisans who sell their goods through this portal, are helping in reaching this goal. It was started in 2016
This portal was started in the year 2016 for the purpose of government procurement on behalf of the central government. Later on it expanded in scope. Now the purchase of essential goods for all government offices including the central and state governments is being done through this portal.

More than 40 lakh sellers of the country are connected to this portal, who can directly sell their products to government departments. A total of 52.76 lakh products are registered for sale here from different locations. Since its launch, a business of about Rs.1.25 lakh crore has been done through this portal.

This is the reason why this platform has been given to artisans, weavers and vendors including women businessmen from small places of the country through this portal.
