Mumbai: The rupee on Thursday climbed 42 paise to 76.20 against the US dollar in early trade, amid early trends for counting of votes for assembly elections in five states and a firming domestic stock market. The rupee opened at 76.27 against the US dollar at the interbank foreign exchange market.
Then it came down to the level of 76.20, registering a gain of 42 paise against the previous closing price. In the previous session, the rupee had gained 38 paise to close at 76.62 per dollar on Wednesday. Assembly elections were held recently in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, where counting of votes is taking place today.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, reflecting the US dollar’s position against the six major currencies, gained 0.16 per cent to 98.12. Global oil standard Brent crude futures were up 3.39 per cent at $114.91 per barrel. (agency)
