CMIE Report: There may be bad news on the inflation front, but there is good news on the employment front. In April, about 88 lakh people were added to employment. In fact, according to data provided by the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), 88 lakh people were employed in April, the highest since the start of the pandemic. However, the available jobs are not sufficient as compared to the demand.
Most jobs after the pandemic
CMII Managing Director and CEO Mahesh Vyas said India’s labor force grew from 8.8 million (88 lakh) to 437.2 million (around 44 crore) in April, the biggest monthly increase since the start of the pandemic. He said the country’s labor market stood at 428.4 million in March. According to the data, the average monthly increase in the country’s labor force was 0.2 million in 2021-22.

employees returning to work
The report said an increase in workforce participation to 8.8 million was possible only when some working-age people who were out of jobs joined the working population in April. This is because the working-age population cannot increase by more than two million per month and any further increase means that those who were out of work return to the workforce.
