Student organizations have protested the direction of Delhi University to take permission for protest outside the campus. The All India Students Association and other student organizations on Monday also submitted a memorandum to Dean Students Welfare. Abhigyan, president of AISA Delhi, said that the students have neither taken permission to protest before nor will they now. Protest is our democratic right. This notice is only a means to increase surveillance on campus and curb democratic practice. DU students unanimously reject it.
Tikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) has also written an open letter against this notice issued by DU. He says that this is very disturbing, because in a democracy the right to protest is a constitutional right, which is provided by the Constitution under Article 19(1)(a), 19(1)(b). Further, taking permission means that the power to grant permission rests with the university. This would certainly mean that some protests would be denied permission on one pretext or the other. KYS says that the proctor’s office should immediately withdraw this notice. Also, students should apologize for taking out such undemocratic notices and ensure that the democratic ethos of the university is not destroyed.
