stockholm. Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah has been selected for this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy stated that the award is being presented for his contribution to “understanding the effects of colonialism without compromise and with compassion”.
Born in Zanzibar in 1948 and living in England, Gurnah is a professor at the University of Kent. His novel ‘Paradise’ was selected for the Booker Prize in 1994. He has written a total of 10 novels. Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, described him as “one of the world’s most distinguished writers of the post-colonial period”.
A gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (approximately $11.4 million) will be awarded under this prestigious award. Last year the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to American poet Louis Gluck. The Nobel Committee announced the winners on Monday for Medicine, on Tuesday for Physics and on Wednesday for Chemistry.
