But he did not get much recognition from this film. In 1998, Ram Gopal Varma cast him for the role of Bhiku Mhatre in the film Satya. Earlier Manoj was chosen as a hero in this film. Later Ram Gopal Varma felt that the role of the villain was more important than the hero in this story.
After this Ram Gopal Varma asked Manoj to play the role of Bhiku Mhatre. Manoj Bajpayee agreed for this role. After the release, the film received a lot of love from the audience and Manoj Bajpayee became famous as Bhiku Mhatre. Manoj got his first National Award for the best performance in Satya.
