New Delhi: A very sad news is coming from South Cinema where a well-known singer and TV host Uma Ramanan has passed away. According to multiple reports, Tamil singer Uma Ramanan passed away on May 1. He died in Chennai at the age of 69. There is a wave of mourning in South cinema due to Uma’s demise but no information has been revealed yet about the reason for her death. She is survived by her singer-husband AV Ramanan and their son Vignesh Ramanan. Uma was one of Ilaiyaraaja’s long-time associates. His song Poongathave Thalathiravai for the film Nizhalgal brought him fame and made him a household name.
Uma and Ilaiyaraaja gave many hits together including Oru Jeevan Alaithathu from Geethanjali, Aagava Vennilave from Arangetra Velai, Poopalam Isaikum from Thambikku Entha Ooru, Poongathaave Thal Thiravai from Neelagal, and Nee Padhi Naan Padhi Kanne from Keladi Kanmani among many others. . Uma enjoyed a successful career that spanned three decades. His singing journey started in the year 1977 with the song ‘Mohanan Kannan Murali’ composed by SV Venkatraman for the film Sri Krishna Leela. After getting trained in classical music through Pajani Vijayalakshmi, Uma met AV Ramanan. At that time, Ramanan was looking for talented singers to join his stage shows and concerts. Their collaboration blossomed, leading to a partnership both on and off stage, and eventually, they tied the knot.
Uma Ramanan also sang her songs mainly in Tamil. She was also a live stage artist, appearing in more than 6,000 music concerts for 35 years. The late singer Uma has worked with many composers like MSV, Shankar-Ganesh, T Rajender, Deva, SA Rajkumar, Chilli, Mani Sharma, Srikant Deva and Vidyasagar. Uma and AV Ramanan also sang a song for the Hindi film Playboy. The news of his death has broken the hearts of the fans. Many fans have taken to X and shared tributes.
