Actress and fitness lover Malaika Arora is definitely one of the most loved judges on Indian television. She is happy that her association with the franchise continues even after the stupendous success of the first season of India’s Best Dancer. Now this festive season, Sony Entertainment Television has come up with its biggest dance reality show ‘India’s Best Dancer – Season 2’! While the show kicks off this weekend, Malaika Arora talks about the theme of the season, the talent of the show and her wonderful rapport with her co-judges.
Here are some excerpts from this discussion.
1. You are the judge of two mainstream reality shows – one revolving around fashion and the other being India’s Best Dancer. What according to you is the main difference between judging these two reality shows?
The main difference is of course the art. On one hand the contestants are trying to hone their dancing skills and on the other hand their modeling etiquette. But as a judge I would say that both have one thing in common that you have to associate with the contestants of both the shows. If there is no connection with them then it becomes difficult to judge and tell them what to do next with their performance.

2. Your way of giving your feedback is very polite and courteous. However, where toughness is needed, you don’t lag behind. Is this a deliberate attempt?
Yes, I feel, like if I have to tell something to my child or to my sister’s children. I think I will do the same. I treat the contestants the same way I treat my kids. If there is a need for strong scolding, I will do it but that too with love. I can be really tough, but I try not to be like that.
3. We hear that this time the judges of India’s Best Dancer are looking for more dance and less stunts. However, these stunts and lifts are a form of dance in itself. How do you tell that to the contestants?
I think if you are given 2 minutes to show your best moves and you only do lifts and stunts, it is not right. But in those 2 minutes if you can show us your best dancing skills with some stunts and lifts, why not. Then it will be all right. I don’t mind that at all. But of course dance should be a major part of you. But I will also say that I want entertainment, and I want to see something different and new. So little by little everything works.

4. You have a passion for classical dance. How much do you like it and would you like to learn more?
When I was young, I used to learn classical dance. Although I did not complete the training. So yes, I am really looking forward to see some classical dance performances in our show as I feel the younger generation is forgetting these dance forms. Nowadays everyone is engaged in hip-hop, break dancing etc., and classical dance seems to be a bit behind. But when someone does a little fusion i.e. mixes classical and western dance forms, I love it. I think you should also embrace that newness and not just stick to the old forms.
5. You are part of a profession in which a lot is expected of you. So how do you balance your personal and professional life?
I think this is the quality of this profession that keeps me going! I always want to do new things, and achieve new achievements every time. I can’t be happy being free or doing the same things. I started my career with modeling, then I got into television, from television to films and now I have been able to start my business with films. So, I feel that I always want to explore new things and never stick to one pattern. I want to enjoy life in every way possible and accept with open arms whatever I get from it.

6. As you said you are active in many things – fitness, fashion, food, different business and much more. How important is it to you to be independent?
I believe that self-reliance is the key to my existence! Also, in my field of work, I feel very happy and fortunate to meet such people.
