The story of the web series is based on the books of Alex Rutherford
New Delhi, Aug 11 (IANS) | The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of historical and period dramas is “all the king’s horses and all the king’s men”. However, ‘The Empire’ showrunner Nikkhil Advani has revealed that the upcoming series is also about women and how they manipulate the destinies of kings and emperors. ‘The Empire’ is a fictional saga of a warrior-turned-king, based on the books by Alex Rutherford, the eponym of two writers, Diana Preston, and her husband, Michael Preston. He is best known for the 6-book historical fiction series Empire of the Mogul.
Talking about making a show around the first Mughal emperor of India who ruled between 1526-1530 AD, Nikhil told IANS, “The first book by Alex Rutherford is about Babur and then it is about 6 books. I explore the entire empire. We’re just stuck to the book.” “The idea and concept was to do a story about the book and to be true to the anthology. Hopefully as the season progresses you will see all the emperors coming. But more important.. the show is not called Emperor, it’s called Empire. Goes.”
It revolves around actor Kunal Kapoor, who is playing the lead role as the king of the series. He is joined by actresses Shabana Azmi, Rishi Dhami among many others, who also stars Dino Morea. What makes the show more interesting is that it is not limited to just kings and kingdoms. Nikhil insisted, “Female characters are extremely important in the show.” Veteran actress Shabana Azmi will be seen playing the role of Ason Daulat, the grandmother of the titular character of Kunal’s Babar. His character would be described as the almighty head of a royal family. Drishti plays Khanzada, a warrior princess and sister of Babur.
First weaves the story of Babur’s grandmother. Talking about it, the listener said, “When I read the book those things really struck me. Kingmakers and the women and the kind of sacrifices they have made and the games they were playing while in the background.” He continued, “How they manipulate the destiny of these kings and emperors, about which we have only read but this is their untold story. It all became fascinating when we all started reading the book.”
The 8-episode series has been shot in multiple locations in India and Uzbekistan. Produced by Nikkhil Advani of Emmay Entertainment, ‘The Empire’ traces the beginning of a dynasty. Co-directed by Mitakshara Kumar and produced by Monisha Advani and Madhu Bhojwani, ‘The Empire’ will soon release only on Disney Plus Hotstar.
