Rhythm Kala Mahotsav is being organized in association with Anjana Welfare Society. Music and dance workshops are being organized during this festival. This art festival, which started from 26 January, was organized online for 45 days. Now this festival will be conducted offline in Noida, Delhi. The purpose of this festival, being organized for the last 8 years, is to connect the youth with the Indian culture. Under this festival, every weekend people associated with the field of art become a part of the workshop organized under it. In this sequence, India’s eminent Kathak exponent and Kendriya Sangeet Natak Akademi Award winner Pandit Rajendra Gangni appeared as a guest in the last online workshop held this weekend. During this, Pandit Rajendra Gangani, who attended the workshop, shared his thoughts on taking art and beyond.
During the workshop, Maya Kulshrestha, the founder of Anjana Welfare Society, said that Anjana Welfare Society has been working for the arts and artists for the past 8 years. This is the ninth year of the society working in this field. Under this, various workshops, some melody and rhythm festivals are commissioned by the society. The Sur Taal Festival is held with and in the presence of the teachers, while the Rhythm Festival is organized for the youth. While talking to Pandit Rajendra, who attended the workshop, Maya Kulshrestha also asked him questions and answers.
Question: Everyone knows that you belong to Jaipur Gharana, whose beauty is Veeras. So how did the Jaipur gharana get started and you belong to a family that has been associated with dance and pandit for generations, so what are the responsibilities that you have seen?
Answer: I consider myself fortunate to have been born in a family and family who have practiced this art throughout their lives and passed it on to us so that we can take it further. Talking about the beginning of the gharana, when the Mughals came to our place, they also brought their art like carpet art, sarangi, sarot, music with them. During that time, Kathak was the only dance that attracted her. Due to this fascination, his art got associated with Kathak. Due to the fusion of music and dance, styles evolved and thus it became an identity and transformed into a gharana.
Question: When we learn about the Jaipur Gharana in Kathak, it is said that it has to be sharp with a sword and in the handling of hands. What would you like to say about this?
Answer: As far as speed is concerned, it means that it should be done with speed. Talking about Kathak of old times, when grammar was Kathak, it was done with full preparation. But when payoffs were also included in it, its pace slowed down a bit. In Jaipur Kathak, along with preparation, the beauty of the body is also kept. She looks beautiful even though she is in motion. In earlier times, Kathak used to be in the temple courtyard, which was a very small space. In earlier times there used to be no stage, but now Kathak has evolved further with stage, light, sound.
Question: You are a master at Kathak Kendra, as far as I know you started teaching very early. During this time you have also seen the change of time. So what kind of change do you see in today’s students?
Answer: Talking about the time, when I started teaching, the students who used to be girl students had no time restriction. He was not attracted to the outsider. At the same time, there has been a slight change in today’s time that today’s students have to do many other things.
Question: In today’s time there are very few youths who want to learn classical arts and those who want to learn are not able to pursue them because of these reasons. In such a situation, as a guru, how can we tell those youth to take it forward or how can we inspire them?
Answer: The most important thing for this is that those who want to learn it, they have to decide for themselves why they want to learn it. Because when you look for a reason in it, it starts confusing you. The situation of the youth worsens when they start looking for something else in it. Before learning it, you should decide whether you like it and have adopted it. All those who learn the art must recognize that whatever they are learning, they are learning it for themselves, not for someone else’s sake or to win or lose. Because art is neither of victory nor of defeat, art is of one’s own behavior. AnyTV is the media partner in this.
