Alleged casteist remarks were made against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 15 (IANS) | Tamil actress Meera Mithun, who was earlier booked for her alleged casteist remarks on social media, has been arrested by the Cyber Crime Branch of Tamil Nadu Police from Kerala. Mitun was arrested on August 12 after he failed to appear before the police. A case was registered against him based on a complaint by Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi (VCK) leader and former MP Vanni Arasu. The Tamil Nadu Untouchability Abolition Front had also filed a complaint against Meera.
He was booked under seven provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act for his casteist remarks made in a Twitter video that went viral. In the video, Meera has purportedly said, “I am not speaking ill about the members of the SC community. However, the community members mostly face problems due to their involvement in illegal activities and crimes.”
She had also said that in the film industry, SC directors and others from the community do ‘cheap things’. “It is time to oust all SC directors and others from the film industry,” he said. VCK chief and MP Thol Thiruvamavalavan had shared the video on his Instagram and said that both the actor and his interviewer should be booked by the police.
In a video taken before the arrest, Mitun can be heard deliberately shouting and alleging that he has been tortured and that all the men in the room were police officers. She also cried in front of the camera and asked why a woman was being harassed. The actor alleged that the police was harassing him.
