Having directed comedy films like ‘Welcome’, ‘No Entry’, ‘Singh Is King’ and the recent blockbuster ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, Anees needs no introduction today. Do you know that filmmaker Anees Bazmee is the person who learned the behind-the-scenes ABCs from Raj Kapoor.
Filmmaker Anees Bazmee started his career as an assistant to Raj Kapoor. He said that there is no doubt that he was a Hindi film icon, but he was extremely short-tempered. His anger was so bad that the crew used to tremble in front of him.
Raj Kapoor used to shout at Anees Bazmee
Anees Bazmee narrated the story of the 1982 superhit film ‘Prem Rog’. He told how due to Raj Kapoor’s anger the team of the film ‘Prem Rog’ had to travel from Mumbai to Mysuru in a truck for 3 days. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Anees admitted that legendary actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor often shouted at him. He said that his fear among his team was such that people preferred to stay in small hotels instead of staying in a 5 star hotel with him.
Raj Kapoor has directed and produced many blockbuster films, including ‘Aag’, ‘Barsaat’, ‘Awara’, ‘Boot Polish’, ‘Jaagte Raho’ and ‘Sangam’.
When Raj Kapoor used to be a terror
When asked if all the stories about his anger were true, Anees said, ‘Anger is a small word to describe how he can be. He used to have ‘terror’. He said that I remember it well. If he was in a bad mood and shouted at someone, then 400 people would not have uttered a word. He said that he had a different personality in films. Good natured, but in real life we assistants were afraid of him.
When Anees made a mistake, he got such punishment
When asked whether he ever shouted at him? Anees narrated the incident and said- ‘Yes… at times, although I used to travel with him in airplanes and stay with him in five-star hotels, all of us assistants would stay in less-fashionable accommodation to avoid staying near him. Liked to stay. But once, I made a mistake. Then I was told that I would not travel with them by plane but would travel from Mumbai to Mysore in a jonga (truck) with other assistants and all the lighting equipment, a journey of 1000 kilometers, which took us three days.
The film released in 1982 was liked a lot by the people. The film proved to be a superhit.
Raj Kapoor had started shooting
He further told that when he arrived, he was told that the shooting had started a few days ago. He reached the set, and then he realized, ‘He (Raj Kapoor) doesn’t need anyone, but everyone needs him (Raj Kapoor).

Anees said that he was short-tempered, but he would always be grateful for the opportunity to work with Raj Kapoor. Especially as a teenager. He said that people graduate from fancy schools. I have graduated from Raj Kapoor University.
