The risk of diabetes has increased in people who have been infected with corona. It is seen that many people who have had COVID-19 have developed diabetes. The question now is whether people who have had COVID are more likely to develop diabetes than those who have not. And if so, is COVID causing diabetes, or is there some reason?
Diabetes occurring in people below 18 years: Recent studies have found that there is a link between getting corona infection and diabetes. A research conducted in the US found that more than 500,000 people under the age of 18 who had covid were at higher risk of developing diabetes than those who did not. However, it is not clear which types of people have a higher risk of diabetes. Another study found that a similar pattern was seen in older people. Most people in this age group were found to have type 2 diabetes.
This reason also came out in the German study: A German study based on medical records also found that more than eight million patients who had corona were more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later.
There are several types of diabetes: There are many types of diabetes. All cause decreases in the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin. Insulin controls the amount of glucose in our blood. If our body does not produce insulin properly, then glucose increases and we start falling prey to diabetes.
Most people have type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is found in most of the people. It is considered an autoimmune disease. It mostly happens to people over the age of 30. In this, insulin is made in the body, but it does not work properly.
Insulin is not made in type 1: Very few people have type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes often occurs in childhood or adolescence. In this case the body stops making insulin. Type 2 patients have to take insulin injections for the rest of their lives.
How can diabetes cause covid? There are many theories about how COVID may cause diabetes, but none have been proven. One possibility is that the inflammation caused by the virus can stop insulin production, which can increase the amount of glucose in the body.
This protein present in the body can be due to: This second possibility is related to ACE2. It is a protein found on the surface of cells. Which is linked to SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).
Some studies have shown that the corona virus can enter and infect insulin-producing cells through ACE2. Which can cause cells to die or change the way they work. This can mean that people are not able to produce enough insulin, leading to diabetes.
