Washington: US President Joe Biden is taking a sweeping step in the election year that could provide relief to millions of immigrants living in the country without any legal status and pave the way for them to get US citizenship. This move is being seen as an attempt to balance the aggressive policy he adopted at the border earlier in the month. His aggressive stance had angered many Democratic lawmakers.
The White House announced
The Biden administration will allow some spouses of American citizens living without legal status to apply for permanent residency and eventually citizenship in the coming months, the White House announced on Tuesday. According to senior administration officials, more than half a million immigrants could benefit from this move.
Know the important thing
To obtain citizenship, an immigrant must have lived in the U.S. for at least 10 years by the time of Monday’s deadline and be married to a U.S. citizen. If a qualified immigrant’s application is approved, he or she will have three years to apply for a green card, and will receive a temporary work permit and protection from deportation in the meantime.
The application process will begin by the end of summer
About 50,000 noncitizen children who have at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen could also potentially be eligible for the same process, according to senior administration officials who briefed reporters on the proposal on condition of anonymity. There is no requirement for how long a couple must be married. Senior administration officials said they anticipated the application process would open by late summer, and the application fee has not yet been set. (AP)
