Jaipur . In Rajasthan’s Sirohi district, seven children, aged between 2 and 14, have died of a ‘mysterious disease’, showing symptoms ranging from fever to seizures. These children, all residents of Phulbai Kheda and Phulber villages of Sirohi, breathed their last between April 9 and 13.
Joint director (health) Jageshwar Prasad said the cause of death was yet to be ascertained.
“Though they appear to be cases of some serious viral disease, nothing can be said with certainty till all their reports are received,” he added.
Prasad also said that deaths were reported within a day of symptoms appearing.
A mother who lost her five-year-old said that her son woke up at 5 a.m. and asked for water before having a seizure. The boy vomited and then died around 8 in the morning.
“Three out of the seven children had consumed ice balls, though they denied having acute food poisoning,” Prasad said.
Teams of doctors from Jaipur and Jodhpur are ready to visit the area.
“The situation is being monitored. Around 300 houses have been surveyed and 58 samples have been sent to a laboratory in Jaipur for testing,” Prasad said.
Meanwhile, three more children have been admitted to the hospital as a precaution.
“He has mild symptoms of cold and one has pneumonia,” Prasad said.
Kuldeep Singh, head of the department of pediatrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Jodhpur, said that it seems to be a case of viral infection.
“The state has sought our help and a team of doctors will be sent there soon,” he said.
