There is a possibility of increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees before Holi. The government will reportedly increase the DA by 3 per cent and that will be effective from January 1, 2022. According to a report released in this regard, the increased salary, along with the arrears of January and February, will be given to the employees in March.
Dearness allowance will be 34%
At present, the total dearness allowance is 31 percent, which may increase to 34 percent after the announcement. If the dearness allowance is increased to 34 percent, then the salary may increase by 20 thousand rupees. Under the 7th Central Pay Commission, the DA of government employees is determined on the basis of basic pay. After a hike of 3 per cent in October and 11 per cent in July, the current DA rate has gone up to 31 per cent.
Major part of salary and pension
It is worth noting that Dearness Allowance is a major part of the salary of the employee and pension of the pensioners. This allowance is given to central government employees to offset the effect of inflation on their salaries. Under the 7th Pay Commission (7th CPC), the government gives increment in DA twice a year in January and July. DA also varies based on the locations of government employees.
48 lakh employees benefit
According to the report, if the government announces the salary hike, it will benefit about 48 lakh central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners across India. Last year, the government increased the dearness allowance of central government employees from 28 per cent to 31 per cent. Despite the COVID-19 epidemic, these employees were given DA increment. However, no official announcement has been made by the government in this regard yet.
