The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed jailed MLA Abbas Ansari to attend the condolence meeting to be organized at his home in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh on June 10 in memory of his late father Mukhtar Ansari. The top court ordered that Ansari be shifted to Ghazipur jail before June 9 and be allowed to attend the condolence meeting without any hindrance.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and KV Vishwanathan also allowed Abbas Ansari to spend time with his family in police custody on June 11 and 12 and directed the state police to make necessary arrangements in this regard. The apex court directed to send Abbas Ansari back to Kasganj jail on June 13.

Uttar Pradesh’s Additional Advocate General (AAG) Garima Prasad said that as per Abbas’s own confession, all the rituals related to his father’s death have been completed and now there are no rituals left. Prasad requested the bench to state in the order that it would not be taken as a precedent as there are more than one lakh prisoners in the state and the court would be flooded with such requests.
On this, the bench said, “You have to deal with law and order, we have no objection in giving such relief to one lakh people.” Mukhtar Ansari suffered a heart attack in a hospital in Banda, Uttar Pradesh on March 28. He died due to the fall. Earlier, the apex court had allowed Abbas Ansari to attend the fortieth anniversary of his late father through online mode.
