Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the blasts in various cities of Afghanistan, in which more than 40 people have been killed. In another blast in northern Kunduz province on Friday, a blast occurred at the Mawlawi Sikandar Mosque in Imam Sahib district, when people gathered for afternoon prayers.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said at least 33 people, including children, were killed and 43 were injured. Officials fear the casualties could rise further. Mujahid tweeted and said that we condemn this crime. Express our deepest condolences to the victims.
Explosives were kept hidden in the bag
In a statement released on Friday, IS said the explosive device used to destroy the Sai Doken mosque of Mazar-e-Sharif was hidden in a bag. When a crowd of people gathered in the mosque, the equipment was detonated.
Bomb blast targeting Shia Muslims
An organization affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) in Afghanistan on Thursday claimed to have carried out a bombing targeting minority Shia Muslims. Twelve people were killed and several others injured in an explosion at a Shia mosque in northern Mazar-i-Sharif.
