Before Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had congratulated PM Modi by posting on social media. Shahbaz had said congratulations to Narendra Modi for taking oath as the Prime Minister of India. Modi took oath as Prime Minister for a record third time on Sunday.
What did Nawaz Sharif say?
Nawaz Sharif posted on social media and said, “My heartiest congratulations to Modi ji (@narendramodi) on becoming Prime Minister for the third time. Your party’s success in the recent elections reflects the people’s faith in your leadership. Let us replace hatred with hope and seize the opportunity to shape the destiny of two billion people of South Asia.”
Leaders of neighboring countries attended the swearing-in ceremony
Top leaders of India’s neighbouring countries, including Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe, attended the historic swearing-in ceremony on Sunday. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay and Seychelles Vice President Ahmed Afif were also present at the grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Indo-Pak relations are not normal
Islamabad downgraded its ties with New Delhi after the Indian Parliament scrapped Article 370 on August 5, 2019. Relations between the two countries have not been normal since then. India has consistently said that it wants normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan, and that Islamabad will have to shoulder the responsibility to create an environment free from terrorism and hostility for good relations.
