new Delhi. The Central Government on Friday introduced the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2022 in the Lok Sabha amidst protests to reunify the three municipal corporations of Delhi. There is a provision to increase the maximum number of wards to 250, after which the wards will have to be decided afresh, which will take time and the election may also be delayed by about 18 months.
Rakesh Mehta, who was the Chief Election Commissioner in Delhi to the State Election Commissioner, told -AnyTV News that the process of delimitation may take from 16 months to 18 months. Although people can go to the court against this, then elections will be held only after the decision comes.
At present there are 272 wards in Delhi. At the same time, the delimitation of the ward will be on the basis of the new census, in which 50 percent are reserved for women. Now again the boundary of the wards and the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Women will be delimited. At the same time, the 2021 census has not been completed yet.
A provision has also been made to appoint a special officer in the corporation until the elections are held after the three corporations of Delhi are united. Also, the tenure of all the three corporations in Delhi is to be completed on May 18.
After the corporation is united, some things will definitely change, instead of three chief engineers, now there will be one chief engineer and its selection will be according to their experience. KS Mehra, who was the commissioner of the amalgamated corporation, told -AnyTV News that there is not much in the process of amalgamation, the three corporations have to do as before. Now after this there are three Chief Engineers of any department in all the three corporations, then the senior among them will now be made the Chief Engineer of one corporation, the rest will work under them.
The change in the number of wards will have to be delimited, now the boundary of the ward will have to be drawn again, it will take time. However, how many wards will remain has not been decided yet. If you reduce 10, it will be quick, and if you reduce it further, it will take more time.
He further said that there is benefit in uniting the corporation. Some colonies are fine in the geographical location of Delhi but some lack resources. Therefore, the revenue generated from those colonies is less. But having one solves this problem. Because the policies of the corporation will become one in the whole of Delhi.
Apart from this, the benefit of uniting the corporation will be only when the policies to generate more revenue within the corporation will be uniform and they will have to be increased as well as applicable to all. Along with this, the employees of the corporation will now get their salary on time.
