New Delhi . Ajay Sood, Honorary Professor in the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has been appointed as the new Principal Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister. It was announced on Wednesday.

Vijay Raghavan tweeted, “Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Professor Ajay Sood, IISc Bangalore on his appointment as Principal Scientific Advisor. He has all the support needed to drive science and technology in these times.”
One of his contemporaries, former DG, CSIR, Raghunath Mashelkar also took to Twitter to congratulate him. “Ajay has garnered praise over the decades as a scholar of great intelligence, impeccable integrity and vast international reputation,” he said.
Sood was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 for his outstanding work in the field of science.
After completing MS Physics from Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1972, Sood did his PhD in Physics from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in 1982.
After being a post-doctoral Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute für FKF, Stuttgart, Germany, between 1983–85, Sood worked as a scientist at the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam, India before joining IISc . He has also been an Honorary Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore since 1993.
Currently, Sood is a member of the Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council to the Prime Minister since 2018. With the Bhatnagar Prize in Physics in the year 1999, Sood has received over a dozen awards for his many achievements from various institutions.
