The governing body of the ATP has taken a big action on the current Olympic champion and star tennis player Alexander Zverev of Germany. The world number three has been banned for eight weeks. Along with the ban, Zverev has also been fined $25,000 for verbal abuse, which is more than the prize money of the Acapulco ATP 500 tennis tournament. Ranking points earned by them in singles and doubles events during this period will also not be included. However, he has been put on probation for one year and his conduct will be monitored during this time.
Zverev recently lost his cool during the Acapulco ATP Tennis 500 tournament after losing a doubles match and hitting an umpire with a racket in his chair besides abusing him. After losing the match in Acapulco, an angry Zverev approached umpire Alessandro’s chair and came dangerously close to strike him with his racket. During this, he did not go towards his court seat and came directly to the officer. Zverev, who was the US Open runner-up of the year 2020, again turned to the umpire and started slamming his racket on his chair. Apart from this, he also used objectionable words. However, he later apologized for his shameful behaviour. But after this incident he was thrown out of the tournament.
After a review meeting in this matter, the ATP found that the 24-year-old had behaved violently. After this, a decree was issued to impose an 8-week ban on him in addition to an additional $25,000 fine. During the suspension, he will not be able to participate in any tennis event.
