New Delhi . Congress has appointed its new president in Punjab. After the massive defeat in the assembly elections, the party changed the state unit and appointed Raja Brar as the new state president. Navjot Singh Sidhu was asked to resign as the Punjab State President after a crushing defeat in the Punjab Assembly elections. On Sunday, the party has finalized the names of the state president as well as the leader and deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the state unit.
Congress has appointed party leader Amarinder Singh Brar alias Raja Wadding as the new state president, who has been the national president of Youth Congress. The party high command has made Pratap Singh Bajwa as the leader of opposition (CLP) in the state and Bharat Bhushan Ashu has been made the state working president. Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned from the post of Congress state president after the defeat of Congress in Punjab elections. The post was vacant since then.
The letter was issued on Saturday by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal. In this, apart from Punjab President and CLP leader, two more appointments have been made. Bharat Bhushan Ashu has been appointed as the working president of Punjab Congress Committee. While the responsibility of Deputy Leader of Congress Legislature Party has been given to Dr. Raj Kumar.
It is worth mentioning that in the assembly elections of five states including Punjab, the performance of Congress was very poor. Congress was in power in Punjab, the only state out of these five. There too the party had to face everyone. The Aam Aadmi Party government has now been formed in the state and Bhagwant Mann is the new chief minister of the Punjabi stronghold.
The Congress government in the country is now left in only five states. These include Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Ever since the election defeat, it is being said that infighting within the Congress is the reason behind the party’s poor performance in Punjab.
Just a few months before the elections, Navjot Sidhu was made the party president in Punjab. Captain Amarinder Singh was very angry with this decision of the party leadership, after which he tendered his resignation from the post of Chief Minister. Captain Sidhu was angry with the creation of the state. The discord in the Congress did not stop here, it continued with regard to the chief minister’s face. However, in the end, Charanjit Singh Channi was made the CM face.
