Amravati. The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday sentenced eight Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers to two weeks in jail in a contempt of court case, but after they apologised, the court modified the order and sentenced them to one year. Directed to serve in social welfare hostels for one day every month for the period. Taking serious note of the non-compliance of their orders by the authorities, the court sentenced them.
Panchayat Raj principal secretary GK Dwivedi, its commissioner Girijashankar, school education principal secretary B Rajashekhar, its commissioner Chinna Veerabhadrudu, higher education secretary J Shyamala Rao, its former director Vijay Kumar, present director MM Naik were present and the principal of municipal administration and urban development. Secretary Y. Srilakshmi was the officer who was sentenced by the court.
After the officers apologized, the court withdrew the jail sentence and directed them to serve in social welfare hostels for one day every month. He was also asked to bear the expenses of the mid-day meal and dinner of the students and one day’s court expenses.
The court scolded the officials for not implementing their orders to remove village and ward secretariats from government schools. It was observed that the officers deliberately did not implement the orders passed a year ago and thus caused contempt of court.
A single judge bench of Justice Batu Devanand had heard the contempt case in September last year. At that time the counsel for the officials and the public prosecutor had pointed out that the state government had already issued orders to vacate the secretariats and Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs) in the premises of government schools. He had told the court that such facilities have already been withdrawn in many campuses of schools.
