ankita bhakt
Indian women’s archery player Ankita Bhakat Antalya has secured an individual quota for the Olympic Games to be held in Paris in the last week of July. Antila confirmed her ticket to the Paris Olympics by defeating Gabriel Monica Bidor of the Philippines in the qualifier match. Ninth seeded Ankita defeated 40th seeded opponent Gabriel 6-0 (26-23, 28-22, 28-23) in the pre-quarterfinals. In this way, India has secured individual quota in archery in both men’s and women’s categories for the Paris Olympics. Dheeraj Bommadevara had earlier secured the men’s individual quota from the Asian qualifying stage.
Deepika Kumari became a victim of upset
Individual quotas are given to the top-8 countries in the Olympics. Each country gets one individual quota. Earlier, India’s top female archery player Deepika Kumari had to face a humiliating defeat 6-4 (26-28, 25-27, 23-26, 24-25, 27-29) from an Azerbaijan player in the opening round of the qualifying round. Her defeat is also being considered a major upset, in which an official of the archery team said that Deepika did not have any complaint of equipment related fault, but this could happen due to poor release. This can also happen due to pressure or some other reason. Due to this defeat, the Indian men’s and women’s archery team could not get a quota from the final Olympic qualifier. However, if both the teams maintain their world ranking, they can make their place for the Paris Olympics by the last date of June 24.
Bhajan Kaur also got the quota
18-year-old archer Bhajan Kaur won the gold medal in the recurve women’s individual event at the Final Olympic Qualifier on June 16, securing India a quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Bhajan Kaur defeated Mongolia’s Urantungalag Bishindi 6-2, Slovakia’s Ursa Cavic 7-3 and Poland’s Violeta Maszor 6-0 to secure her place in the quarter-finals. Bhajan Kaur then faced Moldova’s Alexandra Mirka in the semi-finals, whom she defeated 6-2 to secure her place in the final, and here she defeated the Iranian player 6-2 and won the gold medal as well as an individual quota in archery for the Olympics.
