People know the date of 25 June as a black chapter in Indian democracy. On this day in the year 1975, the Indira Gandhi government imposed emergency in the country. On 26 June, Speaker Om Birla also observed two minutes of silence against the emergency in the Lok Sabha. Now Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has also narrated a painful story of the emergency period. Shivraj told that he was only 17 years old during the emergency. Still, the police arrested him at midnight and beat him badly. Let’s know the whole story.
No one can forget the night of 25 June 1975
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan launched a scathing attack on the Congress while participating in an international dialogue program organized on the topic of Emergency, India’s darkest chapter, at the India International Center in New Delhi. Shivraj Singh Chauhan said, with what face does the Congress talk about the Constitution today? Indira Ji and the Congress had strangled the Constitution. No one can forget the night of 25 June 1975, when democracy was strangled and the Constitution was torn to shreds.
There was an attempt to crush the Constitution- Shivraj
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that Indira Gandhi and Congress had become dictators, they were filled with arrogance. They tried to crush the Constitution and tried to amend it. They strangled the Constitution and democracy. Shivraj said that the Emergency was a period of disgrace for democracy. Arrests of people started at midnight. All fundamental rights were abolished, all businesses were destroyed and ruined, despite this how dare Congress talk about the Constitution today.
I was beaten the whole night- Shivraj
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan also shared his experience of the Emergency. Shivraj said that I was only 17 years old when I was arrested at midnight. I was first slapped four times and taken to Habibganj police station and beaten with sticks throughout the night. I was beaten so much on my knee joints and elbow joints that even today, when clouds come, each joint hurts. The next day when I was being taken to jail on foot in handcuffs, I started shouting slogans that I will not bow down to oppression, if oppression is done, I will fight more. After this, the onlookers started feeling that a teenager studying in 11th standard was being tortured.
We used to spread our bags in front of the public- Shivraj
Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that after coming out of jail in January 1977, we had nothing. After coming out of jail, we came to the village and started the work of Janata Party by renting a bicycle. We used to go to other villages on bicycles and then used to give speeches without mike and used to spread our hands in front of the public saying that we have nothing to contest the elections. See the beauty of Indian democracy that despite not having any big leader, the public gave money and we hired a jeep. After this, meetings and other programs started happening and in fact, it was the public who fought that election and ended the dictatorship. In a decisive way, it is the public of India.
