New Delhi. Today is a day of relief for senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. In the case of two birth certificates of son Abdullah Azam and their misuse, the Allahabad High Court granted Azam’s bail plea and stayed his seven-year sentence. The High Court also granted bail to Azam’s wife Tanzeen Fatima and son Abdullah Azam, although the sentence of both of them has been upheld. On October 18, 2023, the Special Court of Rampur sentenced Azam, his wife and son to seven years each and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each. However, even after the bail and stay on the sentence, Azam Khan will not be able to come out of jail as he has been sentenced to seven years in another case as well.
High Court lawyer Sharad Sharma said that Azam Khan has been sentenced to 7 years in the hate speech case. Abdullah Azam is also an accused in another case. In such a situation, only Azam Khan’s wife Tanzeen will be able to come out of jail. Azam Khan is currently lodged in Sitapur jail, while Tanzeen is in Rampur and Abdullah in Hardoi jail. Azam family had filed a petition in Rampur Session Court against the sentence. After the petition was rejected here, a criminal revision petition was filed in Allahabad High Court.
Rampur BJP MLA Akash Saxena had filed an FIR against Azam Khan, his wife and son on January 3, 2019. According to this FIR, Azam Khan and his wife Tanzeen got a birth certificate of their son Abdullah made from Rampur Nagarpalika Parishad on June 28, 2012 and another birth certificate made from Lucknow Municipal Corporation on January 21, 2015. The place and date of birth are different in both these birth certificates. Azam family misused both the birth certificates by making two passports and two PAN cards.
