A BAI source with knowledge of the matter told news agency PTI, “Gopichand will challenge for the post of general secretary and is expected to file his nomination tomorrow.”
However, according to the BAI’s constitution, only outgoing office-bearers or members of the outgoing executive committee can contest elections for the post of general secretary and Gopichand does not fulfill this eligibility.
Candidates can file nominations from March 9 to 11 while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 17 to 19. The returning officer will prepare the final list of candidates on March 20.
Gopichand is also the secretary of the Telangana Badminton Association and a member of the selection panel. Himanta Vishwa Sarma is almost certain to be re-elected as president while Ajay Singhania, the current general secretary of BAI, is unlikely to challenge for a second term.
