Eight people were burnt alive in Bogtui village of Birbhum district on Tuesday, possibly to avenge the killing of a panchayat official of the ruling Trinamool Congress. Most of the dead included women and children. There is anger across the country over the incident and the main opposition BJP in West Bengal is demanding imposition of President’s rule in the state.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rampurhat-1 block president Anarul Hussain was arrested on Thursday in connection with the killings at Bogtui village in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. A senior official said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had directed his arrest for not paying attention to locals’ apprehensions about possible unrest in the area.
