Washington. US President Joe Biden has announced that he appreciates a massive vote by the United Nations General Assembly to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council in the wake of Moscow’s ongoing war on Ukraine. In a statement issued by the White House on Thursday night, Biden said it was a meaningful move by the international community that further demonstrates how (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war has made Russia an international community.
“The United States has worked closely with our allies and partners around the world to drive this vote because Russia is a gross human rights violation,” he said.
“The Russian military is committing war crimes. Russia has no place on the Human Rights Council.”
“After today’s historic vote, Russia will no longer be able to participate in the work of the Council and spread its propaganda there as the Council’s Commission of Inquiry is investigating Russia’s violations and human rights abuses in Ukraine.”
The US president called the images from destroyed cities in Ukraine, including Bucha, “horrifying” and “a disgrace to humanity”.
Biden called on all countries to “condemn the unprovoked and brutal aggression against Ukraine and support the brave people of Ukraine in their fight for independence”.
Biden said in the statement, “We will continue to work with responsible countries around the world to hold Russia accountable for its atrocities, increase pressure on Russia’s economy and isolate Russia on the international stage.” can go.”
Thursday’s proposal, proposed by the US, Ukraine and their allies, follows horrific images and horrific stories of murders and atrocities that emerged from Bucha after Russian troops withdrew from the Ukrainian city.
It received 93 votes, while 24 countries voted against it, 58 did not vote and 18 abstained from voting altogether.
Soon after the vote, Russia announced that it was voluntarily withdrawing from the 47-member council.
Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative Gennady Kuzminin condemned the proposal as “an attempt by Western countries and their allies to destroy the existing human rights architecture”.
A 2006 resolution of the United Nations General Assembly allows the establishment of the Council to suspend a country if it commits gross human rights violations.
The only other suspension of a council member was in 2011 when the assembly voted to temporarily annex Libya.
