Islamabad: The biggest news of relief is coming for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is in jail in Pakistan. A Pakistani court on Thursday acquitted jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, his aide Shah Mehmood Qureshi and former minister Sheikh Rashid in a case of vandalism. The case was registered at I-9 police station in Islamabad in 2022 on the basis of alleged involvement in vandalism and violation of Section 144 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Rallies were banned under Section 144. While delivering the verdict, Judicial Magistrate Malik Mohammad Imran acquitted the three senior leaders as well as two more Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders – Sadaqat Abbasi and Ali Nawaz Awan. The verdict is a relief for the former prime minister and his associates. Several cases were registered against them after Khan’s government was toppled through a no-confidence motion in April 2022.
There was major violence on 9 May
The party started protests and held a big rally in May 2022, which was led by Khan and joined by thousands of his workers. As the protesters entered Islamabad, small-scale violence broke out and properties were damaged. Major violence broke out in Pakistan on May 9. Islamabad police registered separate cases against 150 people, including Khan as well as other party leaders, on May 27, 2022, on charges of arson and vandalism in the federal capital. The 71-year-old founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been in jail since August last year after being convicted in the cases. (Language)
