Summary
The Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams will open their campaign against a relatively weak Ghana team at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. The men’s team will take on the same opponent in their first match on July 31 and the women’s team on July 29.

The two-time silver medalist Indian men’s team has been placed in Pool B along with England, Canada, Wales and Ghana. While six-time champions Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Scotland have been placed in Pool A. In the women’s section, India is in Pool A which also includes England, Canada, Wales and Ghana.
The Indian men’s team will take on hosts and last-time bronze-medallist England after Ghana on August 1. After this, she will play matches against Canada (August 3) and Wales (August 4). The women’s team will face Wales (July 30), England (August 2) and Canada (August 3) after taking on Ghana.
The top two teams from each pool in both men’s and women’s categories will qualify for the semi-finals. The men’s semi-finals will be played on August 6 and the final on August 8. The women’s semi-finals will be held on August 5 and the final on August 7.
India will send its ‘A’ team to the Birmingham Games in both men’s and women’s categories as the Asian Games, which is also the qualifying tournament for the Paris Olympics 2024, are to be held in Hangzhou shortly after the Commonwealth Games. Both these tournaments are to be held in a span of 32 days and Hockey India is looking to keep fresh its key players for the Asian Games.
The Birmingham Commonwealth Games will be held from 28 July to 8 August.
