For the Punjab Assembly elections, the BJP is all set to come together with Captain Amarinder Singh and Akali Dal break-up Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. Home Minister Amit Shah himself has indicated that he is already in touch with both the leaders, and is making a strategy for the alliance.
Home Minister Amit Shah said on Punjab elections on Saturday, “We are talking to Captain Saab (Amarinder Singh) as well as (former Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa) Dhindsa sahib. It is possible that we may have an alliance with both the parties. We are talking to both the sides with a positive attitude.
It is clear that the BJP is working on a big strategy for the Punjab Assembly elections. The coming together of Amarinder Singh and Sukhdev Singh has given the BJP an edge. Already Amarinder Singh is a popular face in Punjab and now with Sukhdev Singh joining the BJP can make a dent in the vote bank of the Akali Dal.
However, Amit Shah has made it clear in gestures that this time there will be no alliance with Akali Dal. Shah also said that ‘the election will be fought on the basis of merit and development in Punjab’.
On the farmers’ agitation that continued even after the withdrawal of the Agriculture Act, Shah said that PM Modi has shown a big heart. They said, “I don’t think farmers’ movement is still a big issue there…Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown his big heart by accepting the demand and announced the repeal of three agriculture laws.”
Significantly, the ruling party Congress in Punjab is still battling with internal strife. Amarinder Singh has parted ways with the party and had hinted at joining hands with the BJP after the agriculture law was withdrawn. Akali Dal, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party are already playing new tricks for Punjab elections. Now it will be interesting to see how the BJP going with Amarinder Singh and Sukhdev Singh will affect the electoral equation.
