Now the Yogi government of the state will not have to face obstacles in getting the bills passed from the Legislative Assembly passed by the Legislative Council. Soon, like the Legislative Assembly, the BJP will have a thumping majority in the Legislative Council as well. However, even at this time, the BJP is the single largest party in the Upper House.

If the BJP wins 80 percent of the seats in the counting of votes to be held on that day in 27 out of 36 seats in the local body’s jurisdiction of the Legislative Council (which is likely), then after nearly four decades, there will be an occasion when the ruling party’s legislation in the state. Apart from the assembly, there will be an absolute majority in the Legislative Council as well. If this happens, then the ruling BJP will not have to face the obstacles of the opposition in the Legislative Council after getting any bill passed from the Legislative Assembly.

BJP has already won nine seats out of these 36 seats in the local authority and at present BJP is the single largest party in the Legislative Council, the total number of its members in the Upper House is 35 at present. According to experts, before 1990, the Congress used to be the largest party in both the houses of the state legislature. After this, during the rule of BSP in 2003 and 2007, the maximum members of this party were in the Legislative Council, then from 2012 to 2020 before 2020, the Samajwadi Party used to have a majority.
Usually, in this election of local body authority, the ruling party dominates. In these elections held in 2004 during the tenure of Mulayam Singh Yadav, the SP had won 24 out of 36 seats. After this, in the 2010 elections held in the state during Mayawati’s rule, BSP captured 34 out of 36 seats. In 2016, the SP government was formed under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav and when elections to the Legislative Council Local Bodies Authority were held, the SP won 31 out of 36 seats.

In 2017, when the BJP government was formed under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath in the state, even at that time SP used to be the largest party in the Legislative Council, but after that elections were held for the Legislative Assembly Constituency, Teacher-Graduate Area and the Legislative Council in these elections. kept on going. In the Upper House, the term of the members of the SP continued to be completed, many members also resigned. In 2017, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, Dr. Dinesh Sharma, then BJP State President Swatantra Dev Singh, then Minister of State for Minority Welfare Mohsin Raza became members in the Legislative Council.

Now, in the months of April and May, the tenure of six members of the SP, who were nominated by the Governor in the Legislative Council, is being completed. These include Madhukar Jaitley, Balwant Singh Ramuwalia and Zahid Hussain alias Waseem Barelvi of the SP in the end of April and Rajpal Kashyap, Sanjay Lather and Arvind Singh of the SP in May. Obviously, now only BJP members will be nominated on these seats. This will further increase the membership of BJP in the council.
