new Delhi. BJD’s Rajya Sabha member Prasanna Acharya on Wednesday urged the government to bring in a law for censorship on OTT platforms and web channels, so that obscene scenes and content that spread religious hatred can be banned. Acharya raised the issue during Zero Hour, saying that OTT platforms had garnered unprecedented numbers of viewers during the pandemic, when traditional sources of entertainment were hit hard due to restrictions.
Taking advantage of the situation, web channels are showing obscene pictures and sometimes using very objectionable language, he said.
He said that sometimes web channels seriously affect communal harmony with their content.
He said that if there is a provision for censorship, then it will not happen.
In the name of freedom of creativity and expression of ideas, exploitation of women and disrespect of religious sentiments cannot be encouraged, he said.
Pointing out that there is a censor board for films but not for web channels, the BJD MP said a law should be made to impose censorship on web channels.
