The visit of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to India is important in many ways, but in this visit between the Russo-Ukraine war, the agreement between the two countries in the defense sector is very important. The two countries have agreed to jointly research, develop and produce defense equipment.
Experts are considering this agreement as very important, because till now India produces defense technologies from joint Russia together with Russia. With such an agreement with Britain, it could become India’s second largest ally in future after Russia. India has defense agreements with many countries. Defense procurement is also done. But Russia is the only country with which it also produces defense materials. Among these, BrahMos Missile and Indo Russian Rifle Limited are major undertakings. If the agreement with Britain goes ahead, then in future such ventures can be set up by India and Britain also.
Will develop emerging military technologies
According to a joint statement issued by the two countries, Britain’s Defense Science and Technology Laboratory and India’s DRDO will jointly conduct research for the development of defense technologies and develop emerging military technologies. Both countries will also jointly produce them, which will meet the needs of the armed forces of both countries. It has also been talked about forming a Joint Working Group on Electric Propulsion. This technology is very important for the construction of naval ships and submarines.
Apart from developing emerging technologies for the overall strategic partnership, the two countries will also work to develop advanced fighter aircraft, jet engine advanced core technology, defense platforms, parts and other components. If these defense goods will be manufactured in the country with the technology and investment of Britain, then it will meet the needs of India and it can also be exported to other countries.
India will also be able to participate in the construction program of Britain’s aircraft
The Prime Minister of Britain has also announced an Open General Export License for Defense Materials for India. This will give India an opportunity to connect with technology and it will also be able to participate in the construction program of Britain’s aircraft and ships.
Britain has high defense technology
According to defense expert Lt Gen Rajendra Singh, this India-UK partnership is important for both. While Britain is exploring new markets after leaving the European Union, India is trying to become self-reliant in the defense sector. Also, the UK’s stake in Make in India can prove to be important. Britain is one of the top countries in the world that have high defense technology.
