New Delhi. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved amendments to the National Policy on Biofuels-2018. The new amendments will allow for more feed stock for the production of biofuels and advance the ethanol blending target of 20 percent blending of ethanol in petrol from 2030 to 2025-26. This will also give a boost to the production of biofuels in the country by the Make in India programme, units located in Special Economic Zones and export oriented units.
The amendments are also to allow export of biofuels in specific cases and amend certain clauses in the policy in line with the decisions taken during the meetings of the National Biofuel Coordination Committee (NBCC).
In the National Policy on Biofuels, despite amendments to various decisions taken in NBCC meetings to increase biofuel production, the recommendation of the Standing Committee and the decision to introduce ethanol blended petrol with ethanol up to 20 per cent across the country from April 1 to be included.
The proposal will also attract and promote the development of indigenous technologies, which will pave the way for the Make in India campaign and thereby create more jobs, as well as generate more biofuels, a government statement said. There will be a reduction in the import of petroleum products.
As many more feed stocks are being allowed for production of biofuels, this will give a boost to self-reliant India and accelerate the Prime Minister’s vision of India becoming ‘Energy Free’ by 2047.
The National Policy on Biofuels-2018 was notified by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on June 4, 2018 in supersession of the National Policy on Biofuels, which was promoted through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in 2009.
