new Delhi. The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the amalgamation of the three municipal corporations in the capital. Sources said that the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the merger of three municipal corporations into one Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and a bill for this will be introduced in Parliament this week.
Sources said, “Today the Union Cabinet approved the amalgamation of three municipal corporations – North, South and East’ into one MCD. A bill for the three corporations is likely to be tabled in Parliament on March 24 or 25. Parliament After the amalgamation of the three corporations approved by it, Delhi will have a mayor in place of the existing three.”
Bill ‘Municipal Corporation of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2022’, sources said, adding that the amendment provides for a unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by merging the existing three corporations.
The erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi was renamed as the three municipal corporations South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) in the year 2011 by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Amendment Act, 1911 (Delhi Act, 2011). of 12).
“The division of the corporation was uneven in terms of territorial divisions and the revenue generating capacity of each corporation. As a result, there was a huge gap in the resources available to the three corporations as compared to their obligations,” the sources said.
Government sources claimed that as the gap widened over time, the financial difficulties of the three municipal corporations increased, rendering them unable to make timely payments of salaries and retirement benefits to their employees and thus unable to maintain civic services. Serious obstacles arose.
Earlier this month, the State Election Commission had deferred the announcement of the dates for municipal elections, saying the Center was planning to amalgamate three municipal corporations – South, East and North.
