Kolkata. The political situation in West Bengal will soon be such that the local administration will be forced to help the Border Security Force (BSF) to check illegal infiltration and cross-border smuggling in the Indo-Bangladesh border areas. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited West Bengal, said this on Thursday. “I understand that illegal infiltration and cross-border smuggling can be stopped without the help of the local administration,” Shah said at an event on Thursday afternoon on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying ceremony of Maitri Sangrahalaya located at Haridaspur, the border outpost of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. It is very difficult. However, I want to assure you that the political situation here will be such that you will get that help. People’s pressure will compel the local administration to provide that help.”
Shah’s remarks come at a time when West Bengal and the central government are at loggerheads over the extension of BSF’s authority to a radius of 50 km from the borders of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
A notification in this regard issued by the Union Home Ministry has empowered BSF personnel to conduct search operations, arrest suspects and make seizures within 50 km of the border.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aware of the problems being faced by the BSF jawans posted on the border.
He said, “Therefore, the central government is trying to bring out schemes so that the personnel posted at the borders get maximum opportunity to spend time with their family members. The central government is also trying to reduce the hardships of the security personnel posted at the borders arranging for.”
West Bengal Trinamool Congress general secretary Kunal Ghosh said, “The Union Home Minister is trying to convert the BSF into the cadre wing of the BJP. He should refrain from doing so.”
Earlier on Thursday, Amit Shah inaugurated six floating border posts of BSF at Hingalganj in North 24 Parganas district and also flagged off a boat ambulance there.
