Beijing/Tokyo There is a huge conflict between Japan and China in the East China Sea. China’s coast guard confronted Japanese lawmakers in an area claimed by both countries in the East China Sea, the latest in a series of maritime disputes involving China and its allies, China’s embassy in Tokyo and Japanese media said Sunday. Neighboring Chinese vessels took unspecified law enforcement measures. The Chinese Embassy said in a statement that Japan had lodged a serious representation against Japan for “violations and provocations” near the small, uninhabited islands, which Beijing calls Diaoyu and Tokyo calls Senkaku. China described the actions as Japan’s provocation.
A group from Japan, including former Defense Minister Tomomi Inada, was on an inspection mission organized by the city of Ishigaki in Okinawa Prefecture, according to the Chinese Embassy and Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
Japan and China have repeatedly clashed around Japanese-administered islands. China has also been facing increasing clashes with the Philippine navy in disputed areas of the South China Sea, where Beijing’s expansive maritime claims clash with several countries in Southeast Asia. NHK said Inada’s group spent three hours Saturday near the islands, using drones to observe the area and a Japanese coast guard ship trying to intercept the Chinese coast guard.
Japan said Senkaku is our sovereign territory
“The government and the public are aware of the serious security situation,” Inada, a senior official from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said, according to NHK. “The Senkaku are our sovereign territory and we need to go ashore for research.” It was the first inspection visit by a member of Japan’s parliament to the region since 2013, NHK reported. Japan’s Foreign Ministry officials were not immediately available for comment. The embassy said China firmly urged Japan to abide by the understandings reached between the two countries, stop political provocations, exaggeration of on-the-spot incidents and public opinion. Dragon says it urged Japan “to return to the right path of properly managing contradictions and differences through dialogue and consultation. So as to prevent the situation from worsening further.” (Reuters)
