Congratulatory messages are pouring in from all over the world on the victory of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te also sent his best wishes to Modi, to which the Prime Minister thanked him… This upset China. It immediately protested and said that New Delhi should oppose the ‘political tactics’ of Taiwan’s officials. Now Taiwan has given a befitting reply to this.
Congratulating Modi, the Taiwanese President had written- ‘My heartiest congratulations to Prime Minister Modi on his victory in the elections. We are eager to take the rapidly growing ‘Taiwan-India Partnership’ further, expanding our cooperation in trade, technology and other areas.’ In response, Prime Minister Modi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ that he hopes for closer relations between India and Taiwan. This thing hurt the conversation. It protested to India. China has traditionally been opposing any country’s relations with Taiwan. It has been claiming its right over Taiwan and has been refusing to accept it as an independent country. It does not want any other country to be in separate contact with the leaders there. It should recognize them. However, India has not mentioned “One-China” in official documents and declarations for a long time. China remains unhappy with this.
China is spreading misconceptions
Taiwan strongly protested against China’s statement. The Foreign Ministry said, China is falsely claiming on the exchange of messages between Prime Minister Modi and President Lai that India has political commitment to the ‘One-China principle’ and should oppose Taiwan’s ‘political conspiracies’. While countries around the world are congratulating India on the successful completion of parliamentary elections and the re-election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. China is using political pressure and spreading misconceptions in an attempt to confuse the international community. This exposes its authoritarian mindset.
No other country has the right to comment
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said, congratulating each other on the results of democratic elections is not only an international practice, but it also demonstrates friendship and strong trust between us. Other countries have no right to comment on this. The Taiwanese government is keen to increase cooperation with India in the field of economy, science and technology and build close friendly relations. Taiwan is a “sovereign and independent country and has no connection with the People’s Republic of China. This is a status quo that is generally recognized by the international community. The Foreign Ministry said, Taiwan maintains and defends its democratic system and respects human rights and the rule of law. It will not bow down to China’s threats and pressure, nor will it change its sovereign status just because China falsely claims that Taiwan is part of it.
