getting success
Candidates are now choosing subjects like Economics, Law, History, Political Science and International Relations, Philosophy, Sociology as optional choice in the written (Mains) examination and are getting successful.
In the opinion of experts, after the implementation of the National Education Policy-2020, this return of arts subjects will be further strengthened because in the new education policy, the study of multidisciplinary subjects has been promoted at the graduate level. Now the student is not going to be confined within the ambit of any one stream in the four year undergraduate course. He will complete his studies by choosing subjects from different streams.
changed trend
If we look at the trend of the last few years, it is clear that students studying science are also choosing arts stream in the main exam. The number of arts subjects is more in the optional subject for civil services exam. In 2016, about 84 per cent of the subjects chosen by the candidates as optional subjects were Arts (including language and literature).
University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar says that seeing civil services aspirants opting for humanities subjects indicates a positive change. UGC policies under the new education policy facilitate easy choice of humanities subjects. UGC is encouraging higher education institutions to start multidisciplinary courses and students can choose courses from different streams.
Once there was a craze for science
Raghvendra Prasad Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, says that during the 1950s to 1980s, there was a craze among civil services aspirants to opt for science subjects. A large number of candidates who opted for these subjects in Civil Services were successful. In the decade after 1990, aspirants focused on engineering disciplines, leading to hundreds of engineering graduates flying high. Over the years, the number of people cracking the Civil Services Exam with Social Science and Humanities subjects is increasing. He says that the social fabric can be better understood with Arts subjects. He says that in order to provide an efficient and holistic governance system full of human sensibilities, the pool of civil servants should have people well versed in various subjects.
Benefits from our policies: UGC chairman
UGC President Prof. M. Jagdish Kumar says that students not only benefit from multi-disciplinary studies at the graduation level, but also have the option of choosing from many subjects in the Civil Services Examination. Now admissions at the graduate level are being done through CUET and in this also the student can appear for 10 subjects and after that there are many options for admission to graduate level courses. The multidisciplinary and holistic curriculum inculcates attributes, builds communication skills, helps in gaining a deeper understanding of subjects, improves critical thinking abilities and improves writing style, among other skills required by civil servants. Let’s increase UGC’s policies like Curriculum and Credit Framework, Vocational Education Promotion, National Credit Framework, Academic Bank of Credit will bring more new changes in the coming times and the tradition of being bound within the confines of any one stream will also break. The policies of UGC are giving better preparation opportunities to the candidates for Civil Services Exam.
