Nagpur. Supreme Court Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud is often in the news for his strict decisions and comments. This time, while commenting on the actions of the lawyers, CJI Chandrachud has termed it as worrying. He said that the judiciary has broad shoulders and can accept criticism as well as praise, but it is very worrying for lawyers to comment on pending cases or decisions.
CJI Chandrachud said that the officials and members of the Bar, while reacting to the judicial decisions, should not forget that they are officers of the court and not common people. The CJI was addressing the centenary year celebrations of the Nagpur High Court Bar Association. He said that the Bar as an institution is necessary to protect the judicial independence, constitutional values and reputation of the court.
Justice Chandrachud said that the decisions of the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court are the result of rigorous proceedings, comprehensive judicial analysis and commitment to constitutional principles. “But once the verdict is pronounced, it is public property,” he said. As an organization, our shoulders are broad. We are ready to accept both praise and criticism….’
He said that but being members and office bearers of the Bar Association, lawyers should not comment like common people while reacting to the court’s decisions.
